Foreign Trade & Regulatory Glossary

A practical guide to delivery terms, official documents and payment methods used in international elevator shipments.

EXW (Ex Works):

A delivery term where the seller makes the elevator parts available at its own factory, while all risks and costs including inland transport, port handling, customs, freight and insurance are entirely borne by the buyer.

FOB (Free On Board):

A model where the seller bears all inland transport, port and customs costs until the elevator crates are loaded onto the vessel at the designated port; all risks pass to the buyer after loading.

CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight):

A delivery model where the seller covers the elevator price, international sea freight to the destination port and transport insurance, while the buyer bears the risk of physical damage after the goods are loaded onto the vessel.

CFR (Cost and Freight):

A delivery term where the seller pays the freight to the destination port, while unlike CIF, responsibility for the insurance premium during transportation rests entirely with the buyer.

DAP (Delivered at Place):

A model where the seller transports the elevator shipment to a designated address in the buyer’s country, such as the construction site, bearing the transport risks and costs, while the buyer pays customs duties.

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid):

A delivery term where the seller brings the elevator parts to the buyer’s door and bears all costs, including international transport, insurance and import customs duties in the buyer’s country.

Letter of Credit (L/C):

An international bank guarantee under which the buyer’s bank undertakes to pay the goods value when the seller submits the required elevator shipping and customs documents in full.

3D Secure Verification:

An international security protocol for payments made through a virtual POS link, where the bank sends a one-time SMS password to the cardholder’s mobile phone to help prevent unauthorized card use.

Cash in Advance (Wire Transfer):

A payment method in which the goods value is sent directly to the seller by international bank transfer (SWIFT/IBAN) before production of the elevator components begins at the factory.

SWIFT Code (BIC):

A global bank identification code that enables secure, accurate and fast foreign-currency transfers between international bank accounts.

ISPM 15 Wood Packaging Standard:

A global plant-health rule requiring all wooden elevator crates and pallets used for export to undergo heat treatment (fumigation) at the factory to eliminate insects and to carry an official IPPC mark.

FCL (Full Container Load):

A shipment in which a container (20-foot or 40-foot) is completely filled and sealed with complete elevator packages or elevator spare parts belonging to a single project.

LCL (Less than Container Load / Partial Load):

The transportation of a smaller quantity of elevator spare parts that does not fill a complete container together with other companies’ cargo in the same container in order to reduce shipping costs.

CBM (Cubic Meter / Volume):

The basic unit used in logistics freight pricing to express the total volume occupied by elevator wooden crates in a transport vehicle, measured in cubic meters.

Freight Charges:

The transportation charge paid to a shipping or logistics agency for transporting elevator-loaded containers or trucks by sea, road or air.

Demurrage:

A daily delay compensation charge applied when an elevator container arriving at the destination port is not unloaded within the legal free time due to customs congestion or buyer-related reasons.

CE Conformity Mark:

A mandatory mark certifying that the elevator and its safety components are manufactured in full compliance with European Union life, property and environmental safety regulations according to EN 81-20/50 standards.

SABER Registration Certificate:

An electronic registration and customs approval document required under Saudi Standards Organization (SASO) regulations for every elevator project exported to Saudi Arabia to clear customs.

EAC Eurasian Certificate:

An official technical conformity certificate required for elevator registration and customs acceptance in the Eurasian Economic Union market formed by countries such as Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus.

Sea Waybill / Bill of Lading (B/L):

A key transport document issued by the shipping line for elevator crates loaded into a container, representing title to the goods and enabling the consignee to take delivery from the port.

Packing List:

A logistics document detailing which components (motor, rail, shoe, etc.) and how many units are contained in each exported elevator wooden crate, together with each crate’s net and gross weight and dimensions.

A.TR Movement Certificate:

An official movement document enabling elevator products and components exported from Türkiye to European Union countries to benefit from customs-duty exemption (0% customs duty) under the Customs Union agreement.

Certificate of Origin:

An official customs document certifying, under international trade law, the country in which exported elevator spare parts or cabins were manufactured (e.g. Made in Türkiye).

Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI):

A pre-customs official reporting process in which independent international inspection organizations such as SGS or Bureau Veritas verify the conformity of elevator components with the technical specification and quantity while the goods are loaded into the container at the factory.
